This bill modifies Hawaii's labeling requirements for macadamia nuts to include both growing and processing location. The bill requires that consumer packages of macadamia nuts now explicitly state if the nuts were both grown and processed in Hawaii, using specific language like "100% Hawaii-Grown Macadamia Nuts" or "Hawaii-Grown Macadamia Nuts" only if all nuts are Hawaii-grown and Hawaii-processed. If any portion of the nuts are grown or processed outside of Hawaii, packages must include a clear statement disclosing this fact. The bill also mandates that sellers must provide documented proof upon request that macadamia nuts claimed to be Hawaii-grown and Hawaii-processed actually meet those criteria. Violations include using misleading labels that suggest all nuts are from Hawaii when they are not, or failing to disclose when nuts are partially or wholly sourced from outside the state. These new labeling requirements will take effect on January 2, 2026, giving businesses time to update their packaging and compliance procedures.
