This bill directs the Governor's Energy Office to conduct two comprehensive studies focused on expanding renewable energy sources in the state. First, the office will investigate opportunities to revitalize and expand hydroelectric power facilities, which includes reviewing previous hydropower studies, examining new technologies from similar geographic regions (including facilities in Alaska), and identifying potential locations for pumped storage hydropower systems. Second, the office will evaluate the potential for developing a geothermal power plant or geothermal systems, consulting with geologic engineering experts to assess the feasibility of such projects. The studies will specifically consider greenhouse gas emissions and explore potential sites, including brownfield locations and state-owned properties. The office is required to consult with various state agencies like the Public Utilities Commission and Department of Environmental Protection during these studies. By January 15, 2027, the office must submit detailed reports on both studies to the legislative committee responsible for energy matters, and that committee may subsequently propose related legislation. The broader goal of these studies is to support the development of a more balanced and diverse energy portfolio for the state.
