This bill requires public high schools in West Virginia to make adoption awareness materials available to students in grades 9-12 beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. The materials, which will be provided by the West Virginia Department of Human Services, must be made available upon student request and will be developed by the State Board of Education. The adoption awareness materials must cover specific topics including the different types of adoption (such as foster care and private adoption), resources and agencies that can assist with adoption, support for pregnant students and parents, and information about child and human development. Additionally, if any written materials are provided to students, the school must also share those materials with the student's parent, legal guardian, or person acting in place of a parent. The goal of the bill appears to be increasing students' understanding of adoption options and supporting pregnant students or those considering adoption by providing comprehensive, accessible information.
