This bill amends existing Maine state law to provide free day use passes to state parks and historic sites for both veterans and active duty military personnel, and crucially, extends these free passes to their immediate family members. Specifically, the bill defines "immediate family members" as the spouse, domestic partner, and dependent children of qualifying veterans or active duty military members. Previously, free passes were limited to the veterans or active duty military personnel themselves, and family members could only use the pass when accompanied by the qualifying individual. The new legislation allows immediate family members to obtain and use their own passes independently, expanding access to state parks and historic sites for military families. The passes will be issued through a memorandum of agreement between the Commissioner of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry and the Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management, based on criteria established in Title 37-B of Maine state law. This change aims to provide additional benefits and recreational opportunities for those who have served or are currently serving in the military.
