Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend the Burma Unified through Rigorous Military Accountability Act of 2022 to extend the sunset, to require a determination with respect to the imposition of sanctions on certain persons of Burma, and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill, known as the Bringing Real Accountability Via Enforcement in Burma Act (BRAVE Burma Act), amends existing law to require the President to annually assess for seven years whether certain entities and individuals connected to Burma, including state-owned enterprises, Myanma Economic Bank, and those involved in the jet fuel sector, meet the criteria for sanctions. The President must then report this assessment to Congress. Additionally, the bill directs the U.S. representative at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to vote against increasing Burma's shareholding in the IMF if it is under the control of the State Administration Council, which is the current ruling body in Burma, unless the President certifies that waiving this provision is in the U.S. national interest.
