This resolution commemorates the significant contributions of Hmong-Lao veterans who served alongside the United States during the Vietnam War. The resolution highlights that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and U.S. Armed Forces recruited and trained Hmong-Lao forces to combat North Vietnamese and Pathet Lao forces, and recognizes that thousands of Hmong-Lao people courageously fought alongside Americans. After the war, many were forced to flee their homes due to potential retribution, with the last group leaving Laos on May 14, 1975, and eventually resettling in refugee camps and communities across the United States, including Wisconsin. In accordance with a 2021 Wisconsin state law, May 14 is now designated as Hmong-Lao Veterans Day, a day to thank these veterans for their service, recall their accomplishments, and encourage educational institutions to include their military service in discussions about the Vietnam War. The resolution also acknowledges the Wisconsin Lao Veterans of America (WLVA), which has established chapters throughout the state to serve local communities and educate the public about the contributions of Hmong-Lao veterans during the conflict.
