This resolution commemorates the Hmong-Lao veterans who served alongside the United States during the Vietnam War, highlighting their significant contributions and sacrifices. During the conflict, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and U.S. Armed Forces recruited and trained Hmong-Lao forces to combat North Vietnamese Army and Pathet Lao forces. Thousands of Hmong-Lao people fought courageously alongside Americans, and after facing harsh retribution from Vietnamese and Lao governments, many were forced to flee their homes. On May 14, 1975, the last Hmong-Lao soldiers and their families escaped to a refugee camp in Thailand and eventually resettled in various U.S. communities, including Wisconsin. According to 2021 Wisconsin Act 31, May 14 is now designated as Hmong-Lao Veterans Day, a day to thank these veterans for their service, recognize their accomplishments, and encourage educational institutions to include their military service in Vietnam War curricula. The Wisconsin Lao Veterans of America (WLVA) has established chapters throughout the state to serve local communities and educate the public about the heroism and contributions of Hmong-Lao veterans, whom the state now acknowledges for their often-overlooked sacrifices.
