Bill Summary

Current law prohibits any person from operating a motor vehicle on a highway unless the vehicle is equipped with a mirror to provide a view of the roadway to the rear of the vehicle. Current regulations of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) require commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) to be equipped with mirrors on each side of vehicle positioned to provide a view of the highway to the rear and along both sides of the CMV. FMCSA has created an exemption to this requirement for CMVs equipped with a specified camera monitor system. This bill provides that a CMV may be equipped with a camera monitor system approved by FMCSA as an alternative to mirrors that would otherwise be required.

AI Summary

This bill updates Wisconsin's vehicle equipment regulations to allow commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) to use camera monitor systems instead of traditional side mirrors, specifically permitting CMVs to be equipped with camera monitor systems that have been approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) as an alternative to the previously required mirrors. By creating a new subsection in statute 347.40, the bill provides an exception to existing regulations that mandated side mirrors for commercial vehicles, recognizing that modern camera technology can provide equivalent or potentially improved visibility for drivers. This change aligns with FMCSA's existing exemption framework and reflects an adaptation to technological advances in vehicle safety monitoring, potentially offering benefits such as reduced blind spots, improved aerodynamics, and enhanced visual awareness for commercial vehicle operators.
