Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend 256.35 (10) (a) of the statutes; relating to: intentionally sending false text messages to 911 and providing a penalty.

AI Summary

This bill amends a Wisconsin statute to make it illegal to intentionally send a false text message to 911, which is the emergency telephone number used by law enforcement and other first responders. Previously, the law only addressed intentionally making a false call to 911. The penalty for this offense remains the same: a fine of at least $100 and no more than $600, or imprisonment for up to 90 days, or both, for a first offense, and a Class H felony for subsequent offenses within four years.
