Bill Summary

This bill permits certain use of virtual or remote instruction by schools during inclement weather to meet the minimum 180-day school year requirement. Under the bill, if the schools of a school district close due to inclement weather, the commissioner is to permit the district to apply to the 180-day school year requirement, a day of virtual or remote instruction for four or more hours in that same day. The bill permits a school district to apply the bill's provisions to no more than three days per school year. The bill directs the board of education of each school district and the board of trustees of each charter school or renaissance school project to develop and adopt a policy for the use of virtual or remote instruction on days in which schools are closed due to inclement weather in accordance with the bill's provisions.

AI Summary

This bill allows schools to use virtual or remote instruction for up to three days per school year when they are closed due to inclement weather, and these days can count towards the required 180 days of instruction needed to receive state aid. The bill defines "virtual or remote instruction" as a program that lasts for four or more hours on a day schools are closed, and requires school districts, charter schools, and renaissance school projects to develop and adopt policies for using this type of instruction during inclement weather closures. This provision aims to ensure that students can continue their education even when physical school buildings are inaccessible due to severe weather.
