This joint resolution designates September of each year as "Chiari Malformation-Syringomyelia Awareness Month" in New Jersey to increase public understanding of Chiari Malformation (CM) and Syringomyelia (SM). CM is a structural defect where part of the brain, the cerebellum, is located below the normal position in the skull, potentially blocking the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, the liquid that cushions the brain and spinal cord. Syringomyelia is a disorder where a cyst or cavity forms within the spinal cord, which can damage the spinal cord over time and is often related to CM. The resolution requests the Governor to issue a yearly proclamation recognizing this awareness month and encourages public officials and citizens to participate in appropriate activities and programs to inform themselves and others about these conditions, which can cause symptoms like severe head and neck pain, dizziness, and muscle weakness, and for which surgery is often the only treatment.
