This bill establishes special license plates for honorably discharged veterans in New Jersey, allowing them to display their veteran status and military branch on their vehicle plates. To qualify, an applicant must be classified as a veteran according to state law, which is proven by their DD-214 form or a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, and must have received an honorable discharge. The Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will approve the design of these plates, which will include the word "Veteran" and the insignia of the veteran's military branch. There will be an additional $15 fee for these special plates, on top of regular registration fees, to cover production costs. Surviving spouses of deceased veterans who are eligible to drive in New Jersey can keep these special plates for their own vehicles. The Motor Vehicle Commission will inform drivers about these plates through registration renewal notices and by posting information in their facilities. The bill also mandates that the administrator create rules for issuing and using these plates, and the law will become effective 180 days after it is enacted.
