This bill amends Chapter 90 of the General Laws to provide consumers with more information and protection when their motor vehicles are repaired after damage, particularly concerning exterior sheet metal or plastic parts. Specifically, it requires that any written estimate for repairs to these "crash parts" (which are defined as exterior sheet metal or plastic parts that are repaired or replaced due to a collision) must clearly identify if "generic crash parts" (parts not made by the original vehicle manufacturer) are being used. The estimate must also include a prominent notification stating that generic crash parts are warranted by the insurer and the part's manufacturer or distributor. Furthermore, the bill mandates that the repairer must identify the specific manufacturer or supplier of any non-original manufacturer crash parts used in the actual repairs on the customer's repair order, and all crash parts manufactured after January 1, 2010, must have permanent identification of their manufacturer.
