OEA opposes as HB 8 unnecessarily entangles state government in regulating communications and relationships between parents and educators. Government mandates on these matters interfere with the professionalism of educators and weaken the principles of local control of public schools. OEA is concerned that amendments to House Bill 8 target LGBTQ+ students and staff.

HB 68 would prohibit gender transition services for minors and ban transgender females playing on all-female sports teams at the high school and collegiate level. OEA opposes HB 68 because the bill contributes to hostile and unsafe environments for LGBTQ+ students.

OEA opposes HB 214 as it would cause unnecessary distraction and confusion for educators, students, administrators, and parents by requiring vague and amorphous local censorship guidelines in Ohio’s 600 plus school districts and hundreds of charter schools. A state mandated political censorship maze across Ohio’s school districts and charter schools is in no one’s interest, least of all students.

OEA supports HCR 6 as it calls on the U.S. Congress to repeal the Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision (GPO/WEP). GPO/WEP reduce the reduces the Social Security benefits of and reduces, or eliminates, the Social Security spousal or survivor benefits of educators. GPO/WEP discourages people from becoming educators, especially those in mid-career who stand to lose Social Security benefits they have already earned.

OEA opposes SB 83, the Ohio Higher Education "Destruction" Act regarding as it prohibits striking of university/college faculty and staff, prohibits bargaining over tenure, retrenchment, and evaluations, amends faculty evals and tenure rules, restricts curriculum, and promotes an anti-honesty in education in Ohio's institutions of higher learning.

Bill to permit SJR2/HJR1 to be placed on the August 2023 special election.

OEA opposes SJR 2 as it would have eliminated the sacred principle of one person one vote by requiring 60% of the vote to pass future constitutional amendments as well as make it impossible for citizens to place amendments on the ballot.

The bill was amended to allow reemployed retirees to run for the STRS Board for a retiree seat only. This aligns with our position and OEA has testified as a proponent of the bill.

SB 168 makes a number of policy and regulatory reforms to public education. OEA is concerned about many of the regulatory reforms that impact collective bargaining rights, licensure, which we are concerned would lead to devolution of professional standards to address the current education staffing shortages, and other regulatory changes that could run afoul of federal regulation. As such, OEA is opposed to the bill.
