This resolution honors the life and public service of Representative David O. Martin, a Wisconsin state legislator who served five consecutive terms in the State Assembly from 1960. Born in Appleton, Wisconsin, Martin was a University of Michigan forestry graduate who first served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, rebuilding bridges in post-war Germany, and later worked for Kimberly Clark Corporation as a forester and later in government relations. During his legislative career, Martin was known for his bipartisan approach, helping to enact the Wisconsin Wild Rivers law and establish a statewide vocational and technical education system. He worked collaboratively with governors Gaylord Nelson and Warren Knowles on environmental protection initiatives and was the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor in 1970. After leaving the legislature, Martin continued public service by working for the University of Wisconsin System and serving in leadership roles for organizations like Common Cause Wisconsin. He was a family man, survived by his wife Joan, and passed away on January 22, 2025, at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy of public service and environmental stewardship.
