AI Summary
This resolution strongly objects to the arrest and detention of Mohsen Mahdawi, a long-time U.S. permanent resident (green card holder) from White River Junction, Vermont, by U.S. immigration authorities. On April 14, 2025, Mahdawi went to a U.S. immigration office in Colchester believing he was attending his final interview for U.S. citizenship, but instead was arrested by armed immigration officers in plain clothes who covered their faces and refused to provide information about his detention. The resolution, supported by Vermont's federal legislators including Senators Sanders and Welch and Representative Balint, who described the arrest as "immoral, inhumane, and illegal", demands that Mahdawi be afforded due process and immediately released from detention. Furthermore, the resolution directs the Senate Secretary to send a copy of the resolution to key federal officials, including the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to formally communicate the Senate's strong objection to Mahdawi's arrest and detention.
