Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend 48.981 (7) (a) (intro.); to create 48.981 (3) (c) 2r. of the statutes; relating to: the notice of an investigation of child abuse or neglect or unborn child abuse provided to appropriate authorities of the U.S. Depart- ment of Defense.

AI Summary

This bill requires that if an investigation into child abuse or neglect, or abuse of an unborn child, is initiated and a parent of the child or unborn child is identified as a member of the U.S. armed forces, a reserve component, or the Wisconsin National Guard, the investigating agency must notify the appropriate authorities of the U.S. Department of Defense. This notification, which should occur as soon as is practical after the investigation begins, will only include the name and address of the child or expectant mother and the fact that an investigation has been started. The bill also amends existing law to ensure that these notices to the Department of Defense are treated as confidential, similar to other reports and records related to child abuse investigations.
