AI Summary

This bill establishes strict regulations for the sale, labeling, and service of lab-grown meat (defined as cultured animal cells or tissue derived from such cells) in Wisconsin. The legislation requires that any packaged food product containing lab-grown meat must be clearly labeled with the phrase "lab-grown meat" in a prominent, contrasting typeface and include a complete list of ingredients. Additionally, the bill prohibits selling or serving lab-grown meat in public eating places or state institutions (such as schools, hospitals, and prisons) unless specifically ordered by a customer or approved by an institution's superintendent or physician for a specific health need. Violations of these regulations can result in criminal penalties, with first-time offenders facing fines between $100 and $500 or up to three months in prison, and subsequent offenders facing more severe penalties of fines between $500 and $1,000 and potential imprisonment of six months to one year. The bill is set to take effect on January 1, 2027, giving businesses and institutions time to prepare for the new requirements. This legislation appears aimed at ensuring transparency and consumer awareness about lab-grown meat products.
