Bill Summary

CONCERNING DRY NEEDLING BY OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS.

AI Summary

This bill allows occupational therapists in Colorado to perform dry needling, a therapeutic technique involving inserting thin needles into the body, starting September 1, 2027, provided they have the necessary knowledge, skills, and documented competency, have completed a qualifying dry needling course, and obtain written informed consent from patients that includes information about potential benefits and risks and a statement that the therapist is not an acupuncturist. The Director of the relevant state agency must establish rules for occupational therapists performing dry needling by June 1, 2027, ensuring public protection and setting requirements at least equivalent to those for physical therapists performing dry needling, after consulting with the Colorado Medical Board. Importantly, performing dry needling under these conditions will not be considered the practice of acupuncture.
