Bill Summary

Under current law, vehicles entering state parks or Department of Natural Resources recreational sites are required to display an annual or daily admission receipt (commonly known as a “park sticker”). The fee for an annual park sticker for a vehicle with Wisconsin registration plates is $27.50, and the fee for an additional park sticker for the same individual or members of their household is $15. An additional issuing fee of 50 cents is collected for each park sticker. This bill requires the Department of Transportation to provide an applicant for original or renewal vehicle registration a way to indicate on the application that they wish to purchase an annual park sticker. For such applicants, DOT must collect the fees for the park sticker and deposit them quarterly in the conservation fund. On a weekly basis, DOT must provide DNR a list of applicants who purchased a park sticker and DNR must issue stickers to those applicants. For further information see the state fiscal estimate, which will be printed as an appendix to this bill.

AI Summary

This bill allows individuals applying for or renewing their vehicle registration to also purchase an annual state park admission receipt, commonly known as a "park sticker," directly through the Department of Transportation (DOT). Currently, these stickers are purchased separately from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The DOT will collect the required fees for the park sticker, which are $27.50 for a standard annual sticker, $15 for an additional sticker for household members, and a 50-cent issuing fee, and deposit these funds quarterly into the conservation fund, which supports state parks and recreational areas. On a weekly basis, the DOT will provide the DNR with a list of individuals who purchased a park sticker, and the DNR will then mail the stickers to those applicants. This change aims to streamline the process of obtaining a park sticker by integrating it with the existing vehicle registration system.
