This bill amends the charter school admissions provisions in Massachusetts. It defines an "eligible student" as any student who would be eligible to attend the charter school under the district's assignment policy. If the number of eligible students from the city or town where the charter school is located and siblings of current students exceeds the available spaces, an automatic opt-out admissions lottery must be held to fill the spaces. The bill allows for regional charter schools to be exempt from the local preference provisions but requires them to continue giving preference to siblings of currently enrolled students. It also specifies that if the number of remaining eligible students exceeds the available spaces, a single opt-out lottery must be conducted to determine admissions.
