Bill Summary

Under current law, the Department of Justice awards grants to school boards and governing bodies of private schools to assist them in submitting interactive critical mapping data for each school building and facility in the district to law enforcement agencies and the Office of School Safety in DOJ. This bill requires OSS to award grants to technical college district boards so they may submit interactive critical mapping data for each of their technical college buildings to law enforcement agencies and OSS. For further information see the state fiscal estimate, which will be printed as an appendix to this bill.

AI Summary

This bill expands an existing grant program administered by the Office of School Safety (OSS) to include technical colleges, allowing them to receive funding to create and submit interactive critical mapping data to local law enforcement agencies. Specifically, the bill requires OSS to award grants to technical college district boards to develop site-specific mapping data that provides detailed information about college buildings, such as building numbers, floor plans, suite designations, and room numbers. The mapping data must be compatible with existing platforms used by public safety officials and cannot require additional software purchases. The grant's purpose is to enhance security and improve situational awareness for first responders during potential emergency situations. The technical college system board president will work jointly with district boards and local law enforcement agencies to apply for these grants. Additionally, the bill modifies existing reporting requirements, mandating that the Department of Justice include information about these new technical college grants in their annual report to the joint committee on finance.
