Bill Summary

The Department of Justice currently administers several alert systems, under which DOJ works with law enforcement agencies, broadcasters, and others to disseminate information regarding certain cases involving endangered children, missing persons at risk, and veterans at risk. Under current law, to qualify as a “veteran at risk,” the missing person must be a veteran or an active duty member who has a physical or mental health condition that is related to his or her service. This bill removes the condition that the physical or mental health condition be related to his or her service.

AI Summary

This bill amends Wisconsin's "veteran at risk" alert system, which is administered by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and works with law enforcement and broadcasters to share information about individuals who are missing and at risk. Currently, to be considered a "veteran at risk" for the purpose of this alert system, a missing person must be a veteran or active-duty service member who has a physical or mental health condition that is specifically related to their military service. This bill removes that requirement, meaning that any veteran or active-duty service member with a physical or mental health condition, regardless of whether it's service-related, can now qualify for inclusion in the alert system.
