Bill Summary

The Department of Justice currently administers several alert systems, under which DOJ works with law enforcement agencies, broadcasters, and others to disseminate information regarding certain cases involving endangered children, missing persons at risk, and veterans at risk. Under current law, to qualify as a “veteran at risk,” the missing person must be a veteran or an active duty member who has a physical or mental health condition that is related to his or her service. This bill removes the condition that the physical or mental health condition be related to his or her service.

AI Summary

This bill modifies the criteria for designating someone as a "veteran at risk" within Wisconsin's alert system, which is administered by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and works with law enforcement and broadcasters to share information about missing persons. Currently, to be considered a "veteran at risk," a missing person must be a veteran or active-duty service member with a physical or mental health condition that is directly related to their military service. This bill removes that requirement, meaning that a veteran or active-duty service member will now qualify as "veteran at risk" if they have any physical or mental health condition, regardless of whether it is connected to their service.
