Bill Summary

Under current law, when a person is convicted of a crime, the clerk of the court for the county in which the person was convicted and sentenced must provide to the crime victim a notification card that the victim may fill out to request notifications regarding future court proceedings involving the criminal defendant. This bill provides that, if the county in which the criminal defendant is convicted and sentenced has a victim and witness office, that the victim and witness office must provide the notification cards to the crime victim rather than the clerk of the court. For further information see the state and local fiscal estimate, which will be printed as an appendix to this bill.

AI Summary

This bill modifies existing Wisconsin law regarding how crime victim notification cards are distributed in counties with a victim and witness office. Currently, court clerks provide these cards to crime victims, but the bill changes the process so that in counties with a dedicated victim and witness office (as defined in section 950.02 (4m)), that office will be responsible for providing the notification cards instead of the court clerk. The cards, which are designed by the director of state courts, allow victims to provide their contact information and request notifications about future court proceedings related to the criminal defendant's sentence, probation modifications, or other relevant legal actions. The bill ensures that the cards continue to be provided free of charge and maintains the existing privacy protection that keeps victims' mailing addresses confidential and not subject to public records requests. This change aims to streamline the victim notification process by routing these cards through specialized victim support offices where they exist.
